Review of the 2024 Mazda CX-90: More than Just Standard
The all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 exhibits traits more frequently found in German luxury SUVs than in the mainstream models it is most likely to be compared to, but these characteristics also help the CX-90 have engaging driving manners that set it apart from the mainstream competition.
The CX-90 offers a pleasant driving experience that is on pace with premium products and is priced between family-oriented and luxury three-row SUVs, but its interior isn’t as spacious as more family-oriented versions.
The new CX-90 is the newest model in Mazda’s ongoing drive to establish itself as a luxury brand. The CX-90, which is anticipated to ultimately replace the CX-9 in Mazda’s range, marks a radical redesign of what a three-row Mazda SUV ought to be. It employs an entirely new rear-drive architecture and features three new powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid system that gives 26 miles of all-electric range on a full charge and two turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.
The modifications extend inside as well, offering seating for six, seven, or eight passengers as well as an entirely new interior with high-end materials and design elements on higher-trim versions that further emphasize Mazda’s goal to set itself apart from popular manufacturers.
We flew to San Francisco at Mazda’s invitation to test drive Turbo S and PHEV CX-90s in order to determine whether the CX-90 is deserving of its premium standing. (When attending such automaker-sponsored events, Cars.com covers its own travel and hotel expenses.) The two drivetrains have some noticeable variations, as you might imagine, but the CX-90 rewards passionate drivers who demand enough space for their family and their belongings.
Compared to the outgoing CX-9’s front-drive-based platform and turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain, the new CX-90’s platform and powertrains mark a significant departure. However, the switch to this more conventional layout, with a longitudinally mounted engine in the front, offers driving benefits that are consistent with Mazda’s sporty image.
For starters, the CX-90 has overall balance and stability that inspires confidence whether you’re on the freeway or a twisting two-lane road. The CX-90 is simple to maneuver precisely where you want it, but despite the SUV’s typically athletic appearance, the steering doesn’t provide much feel.
The double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspensions on all versions gracefully handle bumps and irregularities in the road. The optional 21-inch wheels and tires have a solid ride quality (which some may find too stiff), but the suspension isn’t shaken by potholed roads. If you’re worried about ride stiffness, the CX-90’s standard 19-inch wheels, and higher sidewall tires could be worth considering.
The new platform’s compatibility with some excellent powertrains is also advantageous. The CX-90’s athletic personality is complemented by both the Turbo S and PHEV, which make the SUV seem quick enough during routine driving.
Are You a Good Fit for the CX-90?
The CX-90 places a strong emphasis on driving performance thanks to its whole redesigned architecture and new powertrains. Although it’s an unusual way to situate a huge three-row SUV that defies physics more than most other sorts of cars, the CX-90 is well worth adding to your shopping list if that’s the kind of car you’re searching for and you care about driving dynamics.
