Bird Buddy, a standout in the hardware startup scene, has captivated a loyal customer base with its innovative bird feeder equipped with a connected camera.

This simple yet engaging concept has also inspired numerous imitations. Among its enthusiasts is our own Sarah Perez.

Today, the Michigan-based company announced the launch of “Name That Bird,” an AI-powered feature that allows users to name and track individual birds. This feature, anticipated to be a hit, fosters a deeper emotional connection between users and the feathered visitors captured on camera.

“Name That Bird” identifies individual birds within a species by recognizing subtle distinguishing features that are typically challenging for humans to detect.

“The detail provided by the 5MP high-resolution Bird Buddy sensor present in all our feeders, combined with its close-up format, is designed to bring out the full character of visiting birds,” says CEO Franci Zidar.

“This makes Bird Buddy uniquely capable of capturing the features required to make this work. The potential is massive, and I couldn’t be more excited for what this unlocks.”

The “Name That Bird” feature is part of Bird Buddy’s broader AI-powered suite called “Natural Intelligence.” In addition to identifying individual birds, the technology can assess whether a bird is injured or sick, a critical function for bird enthusiasts aiming to prevent disease spread.

Moreover, “Natural Intelligence” extends its capabilities beyond birds, providing notifications for non-bird animals such as bees, butterflies, lizards, raccoons, and even prowling cats, enhancing the utility for homeowners.

These new features are part of the Bird Buddy Pro subscription, priced at $6 per month. While not free, this subscription model aligns with the growing trend of smart device services.

In summary, Bird Buddy’s latest advancements in AI-powered bird identification offer users an enriched and interactive experience, further solidifying its position as a leader in innovative wildlife observation technology.
