Bluesky Expands Ecosystem with Flashes, a New Photo-Sharing App
The Bluesky ecosystem is set to expand with the launch of Flashes, a new photo-sharing app built on the AT Protocol. Developed by independent developer Sebastian Vogelsang, Flashes is designed to provide a more visual-centric experience for Bluesky users, while also attracting new users who may not have seen themselves as part of the Bluesky community.
A New Era for Photo-Sharing
Flashes is built on the same technology that powers Bluesky, and has been developed using code from Vogelsang’s earlier Bluesky client, Skeets. The app will allow users to share photos and videos, with support for up to four images and one-minute videos. Comments and direct messages will also be supported, providing a seamless experience for users.
A Growing Demand for Alternative Social Media Platforms
The launch of Flashes comes at a time when there is growing demand for alternative social media platforms. Consumers are increasingly looking for options that offer more flexibility and control over their online experience. Bluesky, with its open and decentralized approach, is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend.
A Developer’s Vision
Vogelsang’s vision for Flashes is to provide a unique and engaging experience for users. “I thought about the idea of having one base social graph and then having just different apps pick from that graph whatever they want to display,” he explained. “I found it very intriguing, because before we had these separated networks.”
What’s Next for Flashes?
Flashes is expected to launch in a matter of weeks, with a TestFlight beta arriving ahead of that. Interested users can follow Flashes’ account on Bluesky for further updates. Vogelsang also plans to launch a video-only app, called Blue Screen, in the future.
