Google Unveils Public Profile Pages for Movie, TV, Book, Album, and Game Reviews
In a move to enhance user engagement and transparency, Google is launching public profile pages that showcase individuals’ reviews of movies, TV shows, books, albums, and games. Starting June 24, these profiles will be searchable through Google searches, potentially allowing others to glimpse into users’ preferences and interests.
While Google introduced review functionality for movies in India in 2017, it has since expanded globally. Last year, the company made review profiles public and searchable in select regions, including the U.S. and India. Now, all profiles will be publicly accessible worldwide.
Users can view others’ reviews by clicking on their profile, which may raise concerns about privacy and targeted advertising. Google emphasizes that profiles can be made private using a toggle, available since earlier this week. However, profiles are public by default, and users must opt-out to maintain privacy.
This change has sparked debate about data usage and potential implications, such as employers or advertisers leveraging user reviews. To address privacy concerns, users can follow these steps to hide their profile:
1. Visit (link unavailable)
2. Click the three-dot menu next to your profile name
3. Select “Profile Options”
4. Enable the Profile Privacy toggle
Note that individual reviews will still be visible under specific titles, but they won’t link to a comprehensive profile page. Google Maps reviews are excluded from this update.
Google aims to make reviews more helpful and accessible, but it’s crucial for users to be aware of this change and take control of their privacy settings.
