MIT Researchers Unveil Comprehensive AI Risk Repository to Guide Policymakers and Industry Leaders

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, understanding and mitigating risks has become increasingly complex.
With AI systems now influencing everything from critical infrastructure to everyday tasks like resume sorting and exam grading, identifying and managing these risks is paramount.
To address this, researchers at MIT have developed a groundbreaking AI risk repository, designed to serve as a comprehensive guide for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and academic researchers.
A Crucial Tool for AI Governance
The new AI risk repository, developed by MIT’s FutureTech group, aims to provide a structured and exhaustive database of potential AI risks.
This tool is particularly timely as governments worldwide, including the EU with its AI Act and California with SB 1047, grapple with the challenge of crafting effective regulations.
According to Peter Slattery, the lead researcher on the project, the repository categorizes over 700 AI risks by causal factors, domains, and subdomains, offering a nuanced understanding of the various dangers AI poses.
“This is an attempt to rigorously curate and analyze AI risks into a publicly accessible, comprehensive, extensible, and categorized risk database that anyone can copy and use,”
Slattery explained.The initiative was born out of a need to create a unified framework that addresses the fragmented nature of existing AI risk assessments.
Key Insights and Findings
One of the repository’s most significant contributions is its ability to highlight the inconsistencies in how AI risks are currently understood and addressed.
For instance, the research team found that while privacy and security concerns were mentioned in over 70% of the frameworks they reviewed, only 44% addressed the risks of misinformation.
Even more striking, only 12% of the frameworks discussed the pollution of the information ecosystem—an area increasingly relevant as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent.
Slattery emphasized the importance of this comprehensive approach: “People may assume there is a consensus on AI risks, but our findings suggest otherwise. The literature is so fragmented that we can’t assume everyone is on the same page about these risks.”
Building a Foundation for Future AI Research and Policy
The repository, which was developed in collaboration with experts from the University of Queensland, the Future of Life Institute, KU Leuven, and AI startup Harmony Intelligence, is poised to become an essential resource for anyone involved in AI governance.
It provides a solid foundation for more specific research and policy development, enabling stakeholders to build upon a more holistic understanding of AI risks.
Looking ahead, the MIT team plans to use the repository to evaluate how well current AI regulations and organizational responses address these identified risks. Neil Thompson, head of the FutureTech lab, noted, “Our repository will help us in the next step of our research, when we will be evaluating how well different risks are being addressed. We plan to use this to identify shortcomings in organizational responses.”
