In a bold display of accountability, CrowdStrike’s president, Michael Sentonas, recently accepted the “Most Epic Fail” award at the Pwnie Awards, just weeks after a software update from the company caused a global IT meltdown.
The award ceremony took place at Def Con, following the Black Hat conference, where CrowdStrike maintained a strong presence with one of the event’s largest booths.
Despite the recent mishap, CrowdStrike’s message at the conference was one of gratitude toward the cybersecurity community.
According to a spokesperson, the company wanted to express its appreciation for the continued support from Black Hat attendees.
Footage from the Pwnie Awards shows Sentonas accepting the dubious honor with humility and candor.
The audience responded with enthusiasm, signaling a willingness to offer the company another chance.
The Pwnie Awards organizers revealed that the decision to give CrowdStrike the award was a last-minute change, given the magnitude of the incident.
As Sentonas stepped up to receive the oversized trophy, he remarked, “This is definitely not the award to be proud of receiving.”
Sentonas further acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “The team was surprised when I said straightaway that I would get it.
We got this horribly wrong, and it’s super important to own it when you do things horribly wrong.”
He emphasized that the trophy would be prominently displayed at CrowdStrike’s headquarters as a reminder of the company’s mission to protect people and the importance of ensuring that such failures are not repeated.
By facing the situation head-on, CrowdStrike has taken a significant step in regaining trust and demonstrating that they are committed to learning from their mistakes.
