X Unveils Message Editing: A Long-Awaited Feature
X, formerly known as Twitter, has finally introduced a highly anticipated feature: message editing. This update allows users to modify their direct messages, providing greater flexibility and control over their conversations.
Initially available to iOS users, the message editing functionality is expected to roll out to other platforms in the near future. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use this new feature:
1. Open a Direct Message Chat: Access any direct message conversation from your X iOS app.
2. Select the Message: Long-press on the message you want to edit, or tap the three-dot menu beside it.
3. Choose “Edit Message”: Select the “Edit message” option to make your desired changes.
X has confirmed that there is no time limit for editing messages. Additionally, users can edit older DMs, although there is a cumulative limit of five edits per message. This aligns with the platform’s existing policy on post editing.
While X maintains a log of edited messages for security purposes, the current version of the feature does not display the edit history. This means users cannot see previous versions of a message.
The ability to edit messages is a common feature in messaging apps, and its introduction to X brings the platform in line with popular alternatives like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger. Apple also added this functionality to iMessage with iOS 16.
The message editing feature is a significant enhancement for X users, offering greater flexibility and control over their conversations. As the feature becomes available on more platforms, it is expected to further improve the user experience and engagement on the social network.
