In a noteworthy move that further solidifies X‘s position as a comprehensive social platform, the company has introduced audio and video call functionalities within its app for Android users.

This update comes shortly after X CEO Linda Yaccarino’s initial plan to incorporate video conversations into the platform by August 2023 and subsequent deployment for iOS users in October.

The latest development caters to the evolving communication needs of X’s user base, offering a seamless and integrated calling experience directly from the app. Notably, while all users can place calls, this feature is exclusively available to paying subscribers, adding to a range of premium features offered by the platform.

To access these new capabilities, Android users are required to install the latest app update. Once updated, they will have the option to make audio and video calls through the X app, enhancing their connectivity and interaction with their contacts and network.

Users have the flexibility to manage their calling preferences through the app settings, specifically under “Privacy and Safety” and “Direct Messages,” where they can activate both video and audio calling. Furthermore, they can regulate who can initiate calls to them, with options including contacts in their address book, users they follow, and verified accounts, providing greater control over their communication experiences.

This expansion of X’s feature set aligns with the platform’s overarching ambition to become an “everything app.” Notably, the company recently unveiled its 2024 vision, which encompasses ambitious plans such as introducing peer-to-peer payments, leveraging xAI-powered features to curate personalized content experiences with “show dissimilar posts,” and providing innovative advertising solutions for marketers.

Despite its continuous efforts to diversify its offerings and enhance user engagement, X has faced challenges, including potential shifts in advertiser spending following a controversial incident involving CEO Elon Musk. Reports indicate that advertisers are increasingly opting to allocate their budgets to platforms like LinkedIn, following Musk’s contentious remarks directed at them during an event in November 2023.

The introduction of audio and video call features for Android users represents a significant milestone for X, ushering in a new era of connectivity and communication within the platform. With a focus on enriching user experiences and diversifying its capabilities, X continues to trace a path toward becoming a multifaceted and indispensable app for its global user community.
