Android’s ‘Collections’ Feature Aims to Re-Engage Users with Their Apps
Google is introducing a new feature called “Collections” to enhance user interaction with Android apps directly from the home screen. Announced at this year’s Google I/O developer conference, Collections is designed to re-engage users with apps already installed on their devices, offering a more integrated and immersive experience.
Developer Tools and Early Partnerships
During the I/O conference, Google showcased tools that developers can use to attract users back to their apps. Though details about the interface were initially sparse, it was revealed that Google is collaborating with over 35 developer partners, including major names like Spotify, Pinterest, Tumblr, TikTok, and Shopify, to test the new feature.
The Engage SDK, introduced at the conference, is central to this initiative. This invite-only toolkit is aimed at bringing users back into their apps by featuring content, promotions, and deals directly on the Android home screen. Google’s goal is to enable continuous journeys across different apps, covering nearly every app category.
What ‘Collections’ Will Offer
Thanks to an APK teardown of the Google Play Store software by Android Authority, we now have a clearer picture of what Collections will look like. Previously known by the codename “Cubes,” Collections will be a Play Store-powered widget on the Android home screen. It will organize app updates into various categories such as Watch, Listen, Read, Games, Social, and Shop.
When users select a category, they will see relevant content from their integrated apps. This organization aims to make it easy for users to find and engage with the most pertinent content, facilitating a seamless cross-app experience.

For example, retail apps could highlight items saved in a user’s cart, while apps like Uber Eats could suggest placing a favorite food order. Similarly, Reddit could encourage users to read and upvote posts, and Spotify could feature favorite playlists.
Enhanced User Engagement
The Collections feature will also allow developers to showcase personalized recommendations and promotions, helping users discover content and deals they might have missed. This level of personalization and integration is expected to significantly boost user engagement.
Accessibility and Launch Plans
The APK teardown revealed that Collections will first launch in the U.S. before expanding to other markets. Users will be able to access Collections via a shortcut from the Play Store app. By long pressing on the Play Store app, a link to Collections will appear in the pop-up menu.
Future Announcements
While Google has not yet commented publicly on Collections, the company has indicated that the consumer experience will be launched later this year. Additionally, Google is hosting a hardware and Android event, “Made by Google,” in August, where it is expected to officially announce the Collections feature.
