Artificial intelligence (AI) models have been observed exhibiting a fascinating behavior, mirroring human tendencies when selecting random numbers. This phenomenon has sparked interest among researchers, highlighting the intricate workings of these systems.

Humans have a well-documented limitation when it comes to understanding randomness. We tend to overthink and misconstrue it, often resulting in predictable patterns. For instance, when asked to predict 100 coin flips, humans typically fail to include sequences like six or seven heads or tails in a row, which are common in actual coin flips.

Similarly, when selecting a number between 0 and 100, people rarely choose extremes like 1 or 100, and tend to avoid multiples of 5 and numbers with repeating digits.

Recently, engineers at Gramener conducted an informal experiment, asking several major large language models (LLMs) to pick a random number between 0 and 100. The results were striking – each model had a “favorite” number that emerged frequently, even when set to higher “temperatures” (a setting that increases variability).

OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 Turbo favored 47, Anthropic’s Claude 3 Haiku preferred 42, and Gemini opted for 72. Moreover, all three models demonstrated human-like biases in their selections, avoiding low and high numbers, double digits, and round numbers.

This phenomenon can be attributed to the models’ training data, which is largely comprised of human-generated content. The models repeat what they’ve seen most often, lacking actual reasoning capabilities and understanding of numbers. They don’t comprehend the concept of randomness; instead, they mimic human responses.

This observation serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing LLM habits and their tendency to imitate human behavior. While AI models don’t truly “think” or understand, their responses often feel human-like due to their training on human-produced content.

This mimicry can lead to both impressive and misleading results, underscoring the need for awareness and critical evaluation when interacting with these systems.
