Amazon Launches Rufus, an AI-Powered Shopping Assistant, for All U.S. Customers

Amazon has officially rolled out its AI-driven shopping assistant, “Rufus,” to all customers in the U.S. via the Amazon mobile app. This innovative feature, located in the bottom right of the app’s main navigation bar, aims to enhance the shopping experience by assisting users in finding products, making product comparisons, and providing personalized recommendations.

From Beta to Broad Availability

Initially available to a select group of users during its beta phase, Rufus has now been extensively tested, handling “tens of millions of questions.” Following this successful trial, the assistant is now accessible to all U.S. customers.

Capabilities and Functionality

Rufus leverages a specialized internal large language model (LLM) tailored for shopping. It draws from Amazon’s extensive product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&As, and various public web sources.

This enables it to answer detailed questions about products, offer buying considerations, and highlight differences between items based on customer feedback and expert analyses.

Users can inquire about a wide range of topics, such as, “What should I consider when buying headphones?” or “What do I need for an indoor garden?” Rufus can also respond to commands like, “I want to start an indoor garden,” by suggesting relevant products.

User Interaction and Insights

During beta tests, Amazon noted that users frequently engaged with related questions presented by Rufus in the chat interface, enhancing their shopping queries. For instance, a user asking about the material of a backpack might also explore customer opinions through follow-up questions.

Rufus also provides contextual information beyond product details. For example, when asked about pool umbrellas for Florida, it offered insights into the state’s weather and humidity.

Fashion Trends and Order Management

In addition to product recommendations, Rufus keeps users informed about the latest fashion trends and technological advancements. It can also assist with order management, helping users track past and current orders.

Getting Started with Rufus

To use Rufus, customers need to update to the latest version of the Amazon Shopping app. The assistant is accessible via an icon with chat bubbles and a sparkle in the bottom navigation bar.

Performance and Future Improvements

In practical tests, Rufus proved to be a valuable shopping companion, generally avoiding inappropriate responses and focusing on relevant shopping information.

However, it sometimes struggled with accuracy and was limited to Amazon’s product catalog, which could affect the quality of its recommendations.
