Mac users can now easily access ChatGPT on their computers, thanks to OpenAI’s latest update. The popular AI chatbot is now available to all macOS users, as announced by the company on Tuesday. This release follows the initial announcement made ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June, where OpenAI and Apple revealed integrations between ChatGPT and Apple’s operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Quick Access with Familiar Shortcuts

After installing the new ChatGPT app, Mac users can quickly access the AI chatbot by using the keyboard combination Option + Space. This shortcut offers a seamless way to engage with ChatGPT, similar to how macOS users use Command + Space to launch Spotlight Search. Instead of traditional search, users can now tap into a broader spectrum of knowledge with just one keystroke. Once activated, ChatGPT appears as an overlay chat interface on the screen, making it easy to use without disrupting ongoing tasks.

Launch Highlights and Features

The initial launch of the macOS app coincided with the announcement of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s advanced generative AI model. GPT-4o boasts enhanced intelligence, capable of processing text, speech, and even video, thanks to its multimodal capabilities (the “o” stands for “omni”).

The ChatGPT desktop app was introduced for both free and paid users, offering a range of functionalities:
Keyboard Shortcut: Invoke ChatGPT quickly with Option + Space.
Screenshot Integration: Users can capture and discuss screenshots directly within the app.
File and Photo Uploads: Upload files and images for a more interactive experience.
Voice Interaction: Speak to ChatGPT from the desktop.
Conversation History: Easily search through past chats.

Initially, the app was rolled out to Mac users starting with Plus subscribers. As of today, OpenAI has announced via a post on X that the app is now accessible to all Mac users.

Expanding Integration with Apple Devices

OpenAI’s collaboration with Apple extends beyond the macOS app. During WWDC, the companies unveiled a broader integration plan, allowing Apple users to access ChatGPT from their iPhones and iPads.

This includes integration with Siri and other areas where AI assistance can enhance functionality, such as Writing Tools. These integrations, also powered by GPT-4o, are expected to be available later this year with the launch of Apple’s newest operating systems.

The availability of ChatGPT for macOS marks a significant step in making advanced AI accessible to a broader audience. With quick access through familiar shortcuts and a range of interactive features, ChatGPT is poised to become an indispensable tool for Mac users.

The ongoing collaboration between OpenAI and Apple promises even deeper integrations across devices, further enhancing the user experience.
