Combating Loneliness with AI: The Friend Necklace
In the dynamic world of AI hardware, startups are vying to revolutionize the market, though results have been varied. Noteworthy attempts include Rabbit and Humane, both of which released devices that failed to impress.
Meanwhile, other startups like a16z-backed Limitless and Exor-backed Bee AI are developing their own screenless AI wearables.
Among these innovators is Avi Schiffmann, a Harvard dropout known for his Webby Award-winning COVID-19 tracking website. Schiffmann is now turning his attention to a new AI device called Friend.
This neck-worn companion aims to address loneliness, providing constant companionship through advanced AI technology.
Funding and Valuation
Schiffmann has secured $2.5 million in funding at a $50 million valuation. His backers include notable investors such as Raymond Tonsing of Caffeinated Capital, Cory Levy, founder of Z Fellows, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas, Solana founders Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal, Morning Brew CEO Austin Rief, Figma’s AI specialist Jordan Singer, and Google senior product manager Logan Kilpatrick.
Product Overview
Friend is designed not for productivity but for emotional support. It connects to a user’s phone via Bluetooth and continuously listens, ready to respond or send messages to the wearer. For instance, it might offer encouragement before an important event, such as wishing good luck before a job interview.
Unique Approach
Unlike traditional apps, Friend leverages its physical presence to foster a more intimate connection. Schiffmann views the product as an “emotional toy,” emphasizing that hardware can enhance the emotional bond between user and AI. He compares it to existing AI models like Replika or Character AI but believes the wearable aspect provides a deeper emotional connection.
Companion, Not Therapist
Schiffmann stresses that Friend is not intended to function as a therapist or productivity tool. Instead, it serves solely as a conversational companion. He sees continuous companionship as one of AI’s most significant benefits.
Evolution of the Product
Originally, Schiffmann’s vision was a $600 pendant called Tab, designed for tracking and transcribing. However, after collecting around $100,000 in preorders, he shifted focus earlier this year to address loneliness with Friend. Customers who preordered Tab are being offered the choice to switch their order to Friend or receive a refund.
Privacy and Functionality
Schiffmann assures users that Friend, while always listening, does not store recordings. Users have the option to delete texts at any time, reinforcing the product’s commitment to privacy.
Preorders and Availability
The company has announced that it will begin taking preorders for the basic white version of Friend, priced at $99, with an expected shipping date in January 2025.
Avi Schiffmann’s Friend represents a novel approach to addressing loneliness through AI. By combining continuous companionship with a physical presence, this neck-worn device aims to offer emotional support in a way that apps alone cannot.
As AI technology continues to evolve, devices like Friend could play a crucial role in enhancing human well-being.
