In a move to stay ahead in the competitive browser market, Google has announced a significant update to its Chrome browser. The new feature, called “Minimized Custom Tabs,” enables users to seamlessly switch between a native app and web content with just a tap.

This innovative addition leverages Custom Tabs, a feature in Android browsers that allows app developers to provide a tailored browser experience within their app.

When users switch between the native app and web content, the Custom Tab transforms into a small, picture-in-picture window that floats above the native app content. This design enhances the user experience by making it feel more natural and intuitive, as if they are still within the native app.

The feature is particularly useful for developers who direct users to websites for tasks like account sign-ups or subscriptions, as it streamlines the transition between the website and native app.

While in the picture-in-picture mode, the Custom Tab can be docked to the side of the screen. Users can easily maximize the page by tapping on a down arrow, which shrinks it back to the picture-in-picture window. This flexible design enables users to effortlessly navigated between the web and native app environments.

The introduction of this feature comes as Google is working to integrate web access more seamlessly into the Android experience. With features like Circle to Search and AI-powered integrations, users can now access the web through intuitive gestures like circling or highlighting items.

The update is currently rolling out in the latest version of Chrome (M124) and will be automatically applied to developers already using Chrome’s Custom Tabs. Google hopes that other browser makers will adopt similar functionality, further enhancing the browsing experience for users across the board.
