Google Introduces Gemini AI to Teen Students via School Accounts

On Monday, Google unveiled its plan to extend access to its AI technology, Gemini, to teen students using their school accounts. This initiative follows the previous rollout of Gemini to teens with personal accounts and is complemented by new tools designed for educators.

Google’s goal with this expansion is to equip teens with essential skills for a future dominated by generative AI. The company believes that Gemini can enhance students’ learning experiences by providing real-time feedback, thereby boosting their confidence in acquiring new knowledge.

Importantly, Google has emphasized its commitment to privacy and safety. The company assures that data from students’ interactions with Gemini will not be used to train or improve its AI models.

Additionally, Gemini incorporates robust safeguards to prevent inappropriate content, such as references to illegal or age-restricted substances, from appearing in responses.

The AI will also encourage students to use the double-check feature, promoting the development of information literacy and critical thinking skills.

Gemini will be accessible to teen students using their Google Workspace for Education accounts in English across more than 100 countries. By default, the AI will be disabled for these accounts until school administrators choose to activate it.

In tandem with the Gemini rollout, Google is launching the Read Along in Classroom feature globally. This tool aims to support students in developing reading skills through real-time assistance.

Educators can assign reading tasks tailored to students’ grade levels or phonics abilities and gain insights into their reading accuracy, speed, and comprehension.

Additionally, Google is piloting a feature that generates personalized stories to cater to individual student needs.

To further assist educators, Google is enhancing tools for creating, managing, and sharing interactive lessons. New functionalities will also allow teachers to manually mark assignments as missing or complete and to perform bulk scoring actions, streamlining the administrative aspects of their work.

With these initiatives, Google is striving to integrate advanced AI technologies into educational environments responsibly, enhancing both teaching and learning experiences.
