In a significant development, Meta has announced the integration of AI-powered features into the WhatsApp Business app, aimed at revolutionizing the way businesses interact with customers.

This move aligns with Mark Zuckerberg’s vision, shared during the Q3 2023 earnings call, to leverage AI in facilitating purchase and support queries for business accounts.

Unveiled at the Meta Conversations conference in Brazil, these innovative tools enable businesses to create click-to-WhatsApp ads and generate responses to frequent customer messages. Zuckerberg emphasized Meta’s goal of developing multiple AI agents that can serve various purposes, including supporting businesses in their customer conversations.

The WhatsApp Business app now utilizes AI to create Facebook and Instagram ads that initiate WhatsApp chats with businesses. Additionally, Meta is testing AI-powered customer support, which automatically addresses customer queries related to catalogs and frequently asked questions. This feature is currently being piloted with select merchants in India and Singapore, with plans to expand to Brazil soon.

To ensure transparency, Meta will clearly denote AI-generated messages, distinguishing them from those sent by human representatives. Furthermore, WhatsApp is exploring the use of AI to send targeted messages to specific subsets of customers, rather than broadcasting updates to all subscribers. Ads Manager will suggest suitable audiences for these messages, enhancing the effectiveness of business outreach.

While Meta’s partners, such as Gupshup and Wati, offer similar tools through their WhatsApp-based CRM solutions, Meta’s AI-driven features are available free of charge, targeting merchants who may not require additional tools. A joint report by Meta and Bain & Co. highlights the vast potential of conversational commerce, particularly in countries like India, where AI-powered assistants can transform consumer interactions into multimodal, vernacular, and intuitive experiences.

By offering these AI tools without cost, Meta aims to increase the volume of conversations between businesses and customers, driving revenue on the WhatsApp Business platform. This development marks a significant step forward in harnessing AI to enhance business-customer interactions.
