Meta’s Threads App Now Allows Users to Customize Their Feed with Swipe Gestures

In a bid to enhance user experience, Meta’s Threads app has introduced a new feature that enables users to personalize their feed using swipe gestures.

This update comes on the heels of the app’s customizable dashboard interface launch last week.

According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, users can now swipe right to like a post or swipe left to indicate disinterest. This feedback will be used to curate a personalized feed, showcasing more content that aligns with users’ preferences.

This innovative approach draws inspiration from dating apps like Tinder, which utilize swipe gestures to indicate interest. By leveraging this mechanic, Threads aims to quickly adapt to users’ preferences and deliver a more tailored experience.

In the realm of social media, various platforms employ different methods to deliver content. While X relies on a traditional algorithm that considers likes and engagement patterns, Bluesky offers a “choose your own algorithm” model, allowing users to customize their feeds or select prebuilt options.

Well-designed For You feeds can significantly boost engagement and user retention, areas where Meta is focused on improving with Threads. With over 150 million monthly active users, Threads still lags behind X’s claimed 600 million monthly active users. However, it surpasses Bluesky’s 5.7 million users and Mastodon’s 7.2 million, with less than 1 million active monthly.

Threads first piloted the swipe gesture feature in March, using heart and eye icons to symbolize likes and hidden content, respectively. This update marks a significant step towards empowering users to shape their experience on the platform.
