OpenAI Prepares to Challenge Google Search with AI-Powered Product

Sources familiar with the plans suggest an announcement could come as early as Monday, potentially stealing the spotlight from Google’s annual I/O conference, which starts a day later. This timing hints at a strategic move to grab attention during a period when Google is expected to showcase its own advancements in AI technology.
The details of OpenAI’s search product remain under wraps, but reports indicate it builds upon the success of ChatGPT, the company’s popular chatbot program. ChatGPT is known for its ability to generate human-like responses to text prompts. The new search product is said to integrate this functionality with the ability to directly access and present information from the web, including citations for increased transparency.

An earlier attempt by OpenAI to integrate real-time information into ChatGPT, known as “ChatGPT plugins,” was discontinued in April 2024. The upcoming search product appears to be a more comprehensive solution in this regard.
