Meta Introduces Communities on Messenger for Enhanced Group Communication
Meta has discreetly launched a new feature called Communities on Messenger, designed to facilitate organized and structured communication for organizations, schools, and private groups.
This development follows the successful introduction of Communities on WhatsApp in 2022, which enabled connections without the need for a associated Facebook Group.
Communities on Messenger allows users to create dedicated spaces for real-time communication, independent of Facebook Groups. This move signifies Meta’s effort to expand Messenger’s functionality, differentiate it from other messaging services like iMessage, and incorporate a broader social networking aspect into the app.
Communities consolidate multiple group chats into a single platform, featuring a dedicated “Home” space for admins to share updates and announcements. Up to 5,000 individuals can join a community through shareable invites, making it an ideal tool for various groups, such as organizations, schools, PTAs, neighborhoods, and friends with shared interests.

While similar to WhatsApp Communities, Messenger Communities are distinct in their connection to Facebook’s social graph, enabling community builders to invite Facebook friends and friends of friends. Unlike WhatsApp, which requires phone numbers for invitations, Messenger Communities offer a more expansive reach.
Meta notes that Communities on Messenger are designed for public conversations, with all current and future members able to view chat content. This feature is now available to all users globally, offering a new way for people to connect and communicate within the Messenger platform.
