X Updates Content Policy to Allow Adult Content with Caveats
In a move to formalize its stance on adult content, X (formerly Twitter) has revised its rules to permit users to post explicit material, provided it meets certain criteria. This shift acknowledges the platform’s existing NSFW communities and aims to strike a balance between freedom of expression and responsible content sharing.
According to X’s updated policy, consensually produced adult content can now be shared, as long as it is clearly labeled as NSFW. This includes AI-generated content, such as images and videos.
The platform emphasizes the importance of user autonomy in creating and engaging with content related to sexual themes, while ensuring measures are in place to restrict exposure to minors and users who opt-out of viewing such content.

X’s violent content rules have also been refined, prohibiting excessively gory or sexually violent material. The platform maintains its stance against content that threatens or glorifies violence.
By allowing graphic content, X aims to facilitate open conversations and the sharing of images and videos. Users can mark their posts as containing sensitive media, and those under 18 or without a verified birthdate on their profile will not be able to view such content.
While X has never explicitly banned porn, this policy update could pave the way for the platform to explore services related to adult content, potentially generating additional revenue streams. With adult content already present on the platform, regulators will likely scrutinize X’s efforts to address non-consensual porn and child sexual abuse material.
This move comes as X faces regulatory pressure, having been fined in Australia for failing to provide information on child abuse content and notified by India to remove such material from its platform.
