Unlocking Accurate Weather Forecasts with Blockchain Technology
Weather forecasts play a critical role in various industries, including agriculture, and are essential for preventing and mitigating harm from inclement weather events or natural disasters. However, achieving accurate forecasts is a daunting task.
WeatherXM, a startup founded by Manolis Nikiforakis, Stratos Theodorou, and Nikos Tsiligaridis, has been working towards improving weather forecasts for over a decade.
Initially, the founders launched an app that enabled community members to provide grassroots weather updates. They then transitioned to consulting for enterprise customers in weather-sensitive industries. Currently, they are developing a network of community-monitored weather stations that collect and share local weather data through blockchain-based systems.
WeatherXM has already deployed 5,000 weather stations across 80 countries, collecting local ground weather information and compensating volunteer monitors with its crypto token, $WXM. The collected data is accessible to anyone for personal use, with paid offerings for commercial enterprises.
Nikiforakis emphasized the importance of open-source data, stating, “We believe our mission is not purposeful without collaboration with multiple different sides of people and expertise.”
The startup recently secured a $7.7 million Series A funding round led by Faction, a blockchain-focused fund, with participation from various VCs. The funding will be utilized to expand the team and monetize commercial users.
Tim Khoury, a partner at Faction, was drawn to invest in WeatherXM due to its attractive use case for a community-driven blockchain project with both supply and demand.
The blockchain and crypto token aspect of WeatherXM’s strategy may seem confusing at first, but Nikiforakis explained that it is essential for scaling the network.

The crypto incentive structure encourages users to participate and ensures that weather stations are deployed in areas that need them most, such as developing and rural nations.
WeatherXM’s focus on open-source data aligns with the need for public and private entities to work together in preparing for climate emergencies and disasters.
By making data openly available, especially from underserved areas, WeatherXM can contribute significantly to communities fighting climate events without requiring extensive resources.
The mission to improve weather forecasts through blockchain technology is commendable, but its success depends on generating sufficient demand. Nikiforakis emphasized the need to create an ecosystem around their technology and ideas to drive progress in meteorology.
By opening up data to everyone, WeatherXM is challenging the traditional siloed approach and promoting collaboration.
