X (Twitter) Faces Backlash Over Data Usage for AI Training
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has ignited a privacy controversy by defaulting users into allowing their data to be used for training its AI model, Grok. This decision has raised concerns among users about data privacy and control.
The platform has explicitly stated that user posts, interactions, and engagement with Grok can be utilized for refining the AI model. Furthermore, this data may be shared with xAI, the company’s AI subsidiary, for the same purposes.
While users can opt out of this data sharing, the process is currently limited to the desktop version of the platform. To disable the setting, users must navigate to the “Privacy and safety” section, select “Grok,” and uncheck the relevant box. Additionally, users have the option to delete their conversation history with Grok.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, has expressed ambitious goals for Grok, aiming to create the world’s most powerful AI by the end of 2024. The company’s decision to leverage user data for training underscores the importance of data in AI development.
X is not alone in facing scrutiny over its data practices. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, faced similar backlash for its plans to use public content for AI training. While Meta initially defended its decision, it ultimately yielded to regulatory pressure and paused its initiative.
As AI continues to advance, the ethical implications of using user data for model training are becoming increasingly prominent. This incident highlights the need for greater transparency and user control over personal information.
It remains to be seen how X will address the growing concerns around data privacy and whether it will make changes to its data policies in response to user feedback.
